Faber and Faber Ltd, London, 1957
First Edition, Second Impression.
Octavo. Dark red cloth boards with gilt decoration to upper board, titles inside yellow tablet to spine in gilt. With 8 pages of photographs and woodcut illustrations throughout. Upper corners slightly bumped, top edge of paper block lightly dust soiled. Otherwise a fine copy in a clean and bright pictorial jacket with several small closed tears, a few nicks and chips to extremities, and slight creasing to top edge. Near fine overall.
With presentation inscription on front free endpaper, "Autographed for Ray Mills by his friend Lawrence Durrell", and signed and dated above by Mills, "Edinburgh September 1957". Dr Raymond Mills was in charge of the medical service on Rhodes while Durrell lived on the island. The two struck up a friendship which lasted until the author's death in 1990. Mills is a central character in Durrell's book on Rhodes, Reflections on a Marine Venus (1953) and is also mentioned in the author's Acknowledgements to that book.
Bitter Lemons is Durrell's memoir of Cyprus during the troubled years 1953-6 and completes his trilogy of island books.
