Type: Modern First Edition
Vendor: Watersmead Books

Description:

Published in France and America, 1927-28

First Editions.

4 volumes, octavo. Original red or orange wrappers printed in black. Spines a little creased and faded, some light rubbing to extremities and the occasional mark; vol 4 has two small ink stains on the top edge, one extending 5mm onto rear wrapper, and a small chip to top outer corner of front wrapper. Internally very fresh and clean, an excellent set overall. Preserved in a black custom drop-back box.

A frequent contributor to the literary reviews of his expatriate friends, in 1927 Pound achieved a personal ambition by launching his own magazine. The Exhile published work by many of the leading Modernist writers, including Hemingway, Yeats and William Carlos Williams. The first issue of 500 copies (including 300 for America) was produced in Dijon by Darantiere (printers of Ulysses and Hemingways's first book Three Stories and Ten Poems), however problems with distribution led Pound to move production to the US with the publishers Pascal Covici (later Covici-Friede). Perhaps having more ideals than money behind it, The Exhile closed in 1928 after only four issues. A scarce set.
