- ELIOT, T.S. SELECTED ESSAYS 1917-1932
Description:
Faber and Faber, London, 1932
Signed Limited Edition.
Octavo. Original blue vellum boards, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Spine faded nearly white as usual with this volume, strips of fading (approx 4cm wide) to margins of upper board where another book has rested against it on the shelf, extremities bumped, abrasion to top edge of block near outer corner. Pages clean and tight. A good copy plus. Lacks the rare cellophane jacket. Housed in a custom blue drop-back box.
115 numbered signed copies, 100 for sale, of which this is no. 6. Signed boldly by Eliot on the limitation page. Former owner inscription to front free endpaper, "Beryl Malyn. In memory of Richard Hillary (my nephew) to whom this book belonged".
A fascinating association copy. Hillary became famous after the publication of "The Last Enemy", his memoir of life as a fighter pilot during WWII, and was feted in literary circles. He came into contact with the work of Eliot and other Modernists while at school in the 1930s.
